Transforming The Tube Exhibition at Aldwych

Over the weekend, I thought it would be nice to check out the Transforming The Tube exhibition being held at the closed Tube station at Aldwych which closed for passenger traffic in 1994. As well as the exhibition, visitors have been given a glance over the old Aldwych station with some preserved features! It is a shame, the visitors couldn’t see the platforms! Here are a few photos I took while visiting…

1. The Surrey Street entrance of the old Aldwych station. As you can see, it is well preserved.

2. The inside has been well preserved and original features

3. The entrance to the station

4. An old tickets and trains sign

5. A preserved assistance booth

6. One of the old lifts that would take you down to the platforms

7. Access to the Gents toilets at the station

8. The exhibition had a lot of interesting information. For example, this train is a prototype design for the Bakerloo line

9. This is a sample of the track used on the London Underground

10. A view of the exhibition

11. The green tiling is still in very good condition

12. In the lift, you can find this! A bell to alert passengers when the lift doors were closing. Also notice the sign that states a maximum of 45 persons in one lift

13. The lift even included seating!

14. One of the most preserved signs! A Way Out sign and directions to Temple station

15. The other lift shaft

16. Other exhibits surround the station

17. More views, this is the exit corridor to the street

18. This is a model of the new entrances to Tottenham Court Road station

19. This model is the proposed design for the new Victoria tube station

20. An interesting photo showing the control centre for the District line

21. Outside the Surrey Street entrance can be found this interesting roundel for Aldwych – the W is very unusual

22. This is the Strand entrance to Aldwych station – notice that the original name of the station, Strand is clearly seen

23. Some of the red tiling has been lost, particular at the bottom

The exhibition will go on until Friday 9 July, so if you want to check it out, why not? At least before they decide to close Aldwych station once more to the public!
