Northern line extension to Battersea consultation begins
Yesterday, it was announced that consultation on the proposed Northern line extension to Battersea has begun. The extension would help the regeneration of projects in the Vauxhall Nine Elms Battersea Opportunity Area including Battersea Power Station, New Covent Garden Market and the US Embassy.
The extension would help improve transport links and help businesses in Wandsworth and Lambeth. Several proposed routes have been discussed. The Northern line extension would divert from Kennington station on the Charing Cross branch and run in new Tube tunnels to a possible intermediate station at Nine Elms before terminating at Battersea on the site of the old power station. There is even a possibility of the extension from Battersea to Clapham Junction.
Mayor of London, Boris Johnson said:
Getting the tube extended to Battersea is an important part of my new transport strategy as it would make a massive contribution to the regeneration of Nine Elms. It is an area that has been neglected for far too long and to rejuvenate it would put the final piece into the jigsaw of central London.
